We love a good cocktail as much as the next person—maybe even more—so it was only a matter of time before we decided to start our own mixology series! Welcome to the debut episode of Mixed Messages, a celebration of the Golden State featuring your tour guide, Clare Ward. From drinks inspired by famous films and television shows to profiling our favorite distillers, brewers and wine makers, Mixed Messages is a tall glass of refreshment to help get you over your mid-week blues.
First up, Clare serves up the Brown Derby, a drink that originated at the Vendome Clubs on Sunset Boulevard in the 1930s. We’ll be serving up new episodes of Mixed Messages every other Wednesday, so make sure to subscribe to our YouTube and click the bell to stay updated!
The Brown Derby
- 2 oz. whiskey
- 1 oz. fresh grapefruit juice
- ½ oz. honey syrup
- ½ oz. apple cider vinegar
Combine ingredients, add ice, and shake until very cold. Strain into cocktail glass—we recommend a coupe— and serve!

Cheery Hues and Classic American Style Inspire a Modern Family Home
Although there’s not one yard of renowned Lilly Pulitzer fabric in the home of Jill and Clark Soderlund, their Manhattan Beach house oozes the breezy, Palm Beach style of the famous 20th-century doyenne of Worth Avenue. Pops of bright colors abound with plenty of light and space, while the wide floor plan is reminiscent of East Coast architecture.
