“I think in a way this record is about coming to terms with the less-than-good things about yourself, and with the parts of your identity that maybe aren’t accepted by everyone else,” says singer and multi-instrumentalist Erin Anne of her latest album, Tough Love. The LA artist says she wrote the title track while obtaining her Ph.D. in musicology at UCLA, waxing on the frustrations of being a woman in academia.
The corresponding video, directed by Madeleine Peters, features Anne in various costumes traveling around LA in search of something she isn’t quite able to find. Inspired by artists like The Killers, Tegan & Sara, and Rilo Kiley’s Jenny Lewis, Anne breeds her own unique blend of punk, pop and rock on Tough Love while exploring the innermost regions of her psyche through her lyrics.
