Monday Moods: “Covers & Coastlines”

Two iconic ’70s hits get the cover treatment in this week’s playlist.

A great cover song needs to be just faithful enough to the original to stoke the fires of nostalgia, yet unique in some particular arena—harmonies, arrangement, or maybe a tempo switch—to set itself apart from not only the original, but the handful of other revisions that have undoubtedly been done. Take the Seals and Crofts classic “Summer Breeze,” which has been covered by everyone from the Isley Brothers to goth rockers Type O Negative. The version we’re featuring by LA indie newcomers Dark Side of Light retains the beautiful harmonies of the original but tweaks the percussion with rolled, reverbed snares and spacey synths. On her cover of Fleetwood Mac’s iconic “Dreams,” songstress Chloé Caroline sets a wistful, new mood with angelic backing vocals but stays loyal to Fleetwood’s driving rhythm.

Rounding out this Monday’s Mood is Joe Wong’s psychedelic “Dreams Wash Away,” Jesse Kivel’s sunny, uplifting “Northside,” and the latest single from Parson James, whose falsetto would make even JT step back and applaud.
