Pot Pioneer Tommy Chong Talks Cannabis Culture in 2020

The actor and icon talks family life, doing time and his plan to save the world.

You’d be hard pressed to find a more pot-friendly pop culture duo than Cheech & Chong. The co-star of such films as Up In Smoke and Nice Dreams, Tommy Chong was recently tapped as a celebrity guest at the famed Emerald Cup, a massive cannabis gathering in NorCal that includes music, guest speakers, and of course samplings of some of the country’s best herb.

About 17 years ago, Chong made headlines when he was incarcerated for selling his Chong Glass brand of bongs and other weed accouterments across state lines through the U.S. mail system. He was sentenced to nine months at Taft Correctional Institution in Bakersfield, but was later pardoned by President Barack Obama—an offer Chong ultimately refused to accept because he thought it was tantamount to admitting guilt.

Los Angeles Magazine caught up with Chong at the Emerald Cup and got his thoughts on California’s weed economy, his family life, and what his plans are to save the world (no, really!).
