La Santa Cecilia, a Grammy-winning band that blends traditional Mexican music with rock-and-roll, got their start on a small but bustling and colorful street just a few blocks from the skyscrapers of Downtown Los Angeles. This is Olvera Street, a charming, walkable thoroughfare lined with restaurants and shops alive with Mexican culture. As one of the oldest streets in Los Angeles, it’s also full of history.
In their Sense of Place session, public radio station KCRW links listeners with La Santa Cecilia’s frontperson La Marisoul who shares her special connection with this stretch of Mexican and California heritage.
