Will California Soon Allow Medical Marijuana on School Campuses?
The new bill would allow children who have been prescribed medical cannabis to ingest on campus.
Late last month, the California Assembly approved a bill that would let school boards vote on whether parents can administer medical marijuana to their children during school hours. Because current laws prohibit cannabis within 1,000 feet of a school, parents must pick up their children, sign them out, and administer their treatments elsewhere before bringing them back to campus. If the bill passes, California would join eight other states that allow medical cannabis on school grounds: Washington, Colorado, Florida, Maine, New Jersey, Delaware, Illinois and New Mexico. A similar bill was introduced in 2018—and passed both chambers—but was struck down by then-Governor Jerry Brown. With the more progressive Newsom at the helm, the bill has a good chance of passing.
